Our Legacy

A century of elegance, reimagined for today

How We Got Here

Look, we're not gonna pretend we've always been perfect. But we've been here through it all - the jazz age, the depression, the boom years, and everything in between.

1923

The Beginning

Original Construction

Edmund Eldryth wasn't from money - he just had this crazy vision. Built this place when Bloor West was basically farmland. His wife Margaret thought he'd lost it, honestly. But the guy had taste, I'll give him that. Imported marble from Italy, chandeliers from Paris, the whole nine yards.

1945

The Golden Era

Grand Ballroom 1945

Post-war Toronto was buzzing, and we were right in the thick of it. The ballroom saw everyone who was anyone - politicians, movie stars, even some royalty. There's stories the staff still tell about those nights, though most of 'em probably shouldn't be repeated in polite company.

1978

The Rough Patch

Renovation Period

Let's not sugarcoat it - the 70s and 80s weren't kind to us. Newer hotels popped up, and we got a bit... tired. Almost lost the place to developers who wanted to tear it down for condos. Thank god for heritage protection and a group of locals who actually cared about preserving something beautiful.

2003

The Renaissance

Grand Reopening

New ownership came in with deep pockets and even deeper respect for what Edmund built. They didn't just slap some paint on and call it a day. No, they went through every room, every fixture, keeping what made us special while bringing in what modern guests actually need. Took three years and we emerged as something pretty special.

Today

Eldryth Valorium Today

We're still here, still standing tall on Bloor West. The neighborhood grew up around us, and honestly, we grew with it. You'll find the same attention to detail Edmund insisted on, but now with wifi that actually works and bathrooms that won't make you cringe. We think he'd approve.

Edmund Eldryth

"A hotel isn't just walls and beds. It's the feeling you get when someone remembers your name, the comfort of knowing everything's been thought of before you even asked. Build that, and they'll keep coming back."

Edmund Eldryth, Founder
Written in his journal, 1923

He wrote this the night before opening day. Still gets us every time we read it.

Our Team

What We're Actually About

You know what bugs us? Hotels that forget they're supposed to be, well, hospitable. We've got staff who've been here for decades - Rosa at the front desk started in 1998, and she knows every regular by their coffee order.

Sure, we've got the fancy stuff - the spa, the restaurant with the Michelin attention, rooms that make you want to cancel your plans and just stay in. But that's not what keeps people coming back.

It's the way Marcus in valet remembers where you like to park. How the bartender knows to start your Old Fashioned when he sees you walk in. The fact that we'll move heaven and earth to get you that specific pillow you mentioned offhand two years ago.

That's the Eldryth difference - we actually give a damn.

The Hardware

Look, we're not ones to brag, but when people notice what you're doing right, it feels pretty good.
